Formålet er å velge ut sanger litt utenom allfarvei slik at våre mange lesere kanskje kan oppdage noen nye favoritter. Ukens låt #67: Bruce Springsteen – «Something In The Well» (1993/1994-2025)
For noen uker siden slapp Bruce Springsteen boksen «Tracks II: The Lost Albums». I alt er det snakk om hele 83 spor, 74 av dem tidligere uhørt, alle innspilt mellom 1983 og 2018.
Å plukke ut en favoritt derfra er umulig, til det er der alt for mange knall-låter å velge mellom. Det sagt: I Popklikk-redaksjonen har ukens utvalgte låt, «Something In The Well», i stadig større og større grad grad festet taket. En låt der uhyggen i teksten er pakket inn i en perfekte melodi omkranset av piano, synth, cello og krydret med den ultimate gitaren.
«Something In The Well» er hentet fra «Streets of Philadelphia Sessions»-albumet. Låta ble mest sannsynlig skrevet tidlig i 1994, eller muligens i 1993.
Etter de to skuffende platene «Human Touch» og «Lucky Town» (1992), prøvde Springsteens å gå nye veier musikalsk som soloartist, godt hjulpet av elektronikk og tromme-loops. Selvom Springsteen i denne perioden levde et godt liv som lykkelig, nygift småbarnsfar, er flere av tekstene på «Streets of Philadelphia Sessions»-albumet blant hans mørkeste. Noe «Something In The Well» er et fint, men ganske så dystert eksempel på:
Hey the well was torn open and I stared down / Into the muddy darkness my black tears fell / Stars spread their false light on the earth / Moon slipped from the sky and fell
Om tekstene på plata forteller Springsteen selv følgende:
«That was just the theme that I locked in on at that moment. I don’t really know why.Patti and I, we were having a great time in California. But sometimes if you lock into one song you like then you follow that thread. I had this song ‘Blind Spot,’ and I followed that thread through the rest of the record. It was a very dark album which was one of the reasons, maybe, that it didn’t come out at the time that I recorded it.»
«The problem I had then was I had made Tunnel of Love, I had made Human Touch, I had made Lucky Town: three albums about relation- ships in a row. It was the early nineties, and that was a very volatile and different time in the music industry. So a fourth album—particularly a fourth, really dark album about relationships—is something that I didn’t know if the audience was ready for. So I didn’t put it out.»
